For science communication to be effective, reflexive and sustainable in real world contexts it requires contributions from science communication research and practice alike. However, despite the growth of both communities, there are relatively few instances of exchange and collaboration between science communication research and practice. Among the vast body of knowledge that research on science communication has accumulated, insights with direct relevance for practitioners working in the field are rare and it can be challenging for practitioners to find, access and interpret relevant research. This poses an enormous challenge for science communication. This Special Issue is dedicated to informing and enhancing exchanges and collaborations between science communication research and practice, as well as to encouraging a debate on how this might be achieved and sustained. For this Special Issue we have received over 70 abstract submissions and have invited selected authors to submit full paper submissions concerned with the research-practice nexus in science communication. The invited submissions cover a variety of countries, disciplines, perspectives and types of science communication.
