About the journal The Journal of Science Communication (JCOM) is a diamond open access, peer reviewed journal focused on science communication. The Journal covers a broad range of issues pertinent to science communication and public engagement with STEM, including citizen science as well as environmental and health communication, where these relate to communication of research.
Preparing for submission

Before preparing their manuscripts and starting submitting, authors should read carefully the guidelines for authors.

In particular,

  • - submissions must fall within the Journal’s scope, meet the JCOM editorial policy and the specific requirements for their manuscript’s article type.
  • - Spontaneous submissions are welcome all year round for the following article types: Research article, Practice insights, Essays and Letters. If you wish to submit a review article you should contact in advance the JCOM Editorial Office (jcom-eo@jcom.sissa.it). If you wish to submit a book or a conference review you should contact in advance Marina Joubert, the deputy editor of JCOM (marinajoubert@sun.ac.za).
  • - Submissions to Special Issues and Commentary sets must be invited. Potential authors of Special Issue contributions should read carefully the relevant “call for papers”, if and when open.
  • - During submission, authors are requested to declare any Conflict of Interest, to confirm that they acknowledge the Open-Access and Copyright policy (see below) and to confirm the submission checklist below.
Submission Checklist
  • - I have read and acknowledge the Journal's ethical policy;
  • - In particular, I have disclosed any use of GenAI either in the methods or acknowledgments section (name, version and manufacturer of the tools I used as well as my prompts and outputs);
  • - I have read the definition of the different article types and confirm that my manuscript conforms to the type I will select in submission
  • - My manuscript complies with the Journal stylistic guidelines;
  • - My manuscript includes line numbering;
  • - My manuscript does not include any author information;
  • - Any grants received have been declared in my manuscript's "Acknowledgements" section;
  • - My manuscript has been proof-read for English language (this does not apply to manuscript written in other languages);
  • - I confirm that title and abstract that I will enter on the article information page correspond to those written in the manuscript file.
Peer Review

Research articles, essays, practice insights and research reviews are double-anonymous peer reviewed.

Book reviews, conference reviews, letters and commentaries are reviewed by the JCOM Editorial Board.

Licences

Journal of Science Communication allows the following licences for submission:

  • CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 - More Information  
    Attribution — You must give appropriate credit, provide a link to the license, and indicate if changes were made. You may do so in any reasonable manner, but not in any way that suggests the licensor endorses you or your use. NonCommercial — You may not use the material for commercial purposes. NoDerivatives — If you remix, transform, or build upon the material, you may not distribute the modified material. No additional restrictions — You may not apply legal terms or technological measures that legally restrict others from doing anything the license permits.
