Stars, stories, and STEM: indigenous-led science communication as a catalyst for transforming Australia's National Science Week
Indigenous storytelling is both cultural heritage and a powerful mode of science communication. This article examines how Storywork rooted in relationships, Country, and community authority can convey scientific knowledge alongside Western approaches. Drawing on Australian National Science Week case studies, this article shows how Indigenous-led storytelling fosters accessible, engaging STEM learning for diverse audiences, bridges knowledge systems, and strengthens relational understanding. A practical framework for culturally grounded, ethically sound, Indigenous-led engagement, emphasising co-design, cultural protocols, place-based learning, and long-term relationships is proposed. Recognising storytelling as legitimate science communication could transform Australian National Science Week into sustained, inclusive, and decolonial knowledge exchange.
