Multidisciplinary journalism as a strategy for climate adaptation: the case of `Weather Stories' in the Spanish press

Climate change is increasing the intensity and frequency of extreme weather events, posing growing challenges for public safety. This practice insight investigates the contributions of multidisciplinary journalism to climate change adaptation. It focuses on a science communication model, Historias del Tiempo (`Weather Stories'), published by the Spanish newspaper La Voz de Galicia. Using a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative and qualitative content analysis, we consider how this model has introduced meteorological phenomena previously unfamiliar in the Spanish media, such as the `atmospheric river', and enabled the real-time incorporation of other uncommon concepts, including the `mega-heatwave'. The evaluation shows that multidisciplinary journalism can operate as a communication infrastructure supporting climate literacy and public understanding of risk, helping to bridge the gap between science and society in the context of escalating climate hazards.
